Tiwanaku Alien and Evolution

It was mentioned on a biology blog that archaeological engravings from the Tiwanaku civilization in Bolivia are unlikely to be depicting an ancient astronaut for the reason that, even with an aquatic tail, the creature still looks too much like a human. The underlying argument was that the evolution of life forms is so diverse that it is highly unlikely an alien would come out looking even remotely like us. In essence, this is the opposite side of the pendulum to Hollywood's consistent imaging of aliens as humanoids.

The biologist ignored the decorative and symbolic imagery added by the Tiwanaku artists and did not consider the given premise of an aquatic alien inside helmeted spacesuit. I have to assume, therefore, the biologist noted that the creature had two arms and two eyes, and since humans have two arms and two eyes, the biologist concluded that this cannot be an alien.

What should intelligent aliens look like? Or, to phrase it another way, what should we expect interstellar travelers who come here to look like? This is not a complete unknown. If the aliens are capable of interstellar travel, they obviously achieved higher technology. What is necessary to achieve technology? My opinion on this is that to achieve technology, a life form would need a complex brain and the ability to see and manipulate objects. This implies eyes, fingered appendages, and perhaps a head relatively large compared to overall body size. The Tiwanaku alien has all these features.

The biologist might counter that the issue is not that aliens have eyes, but the number of eyes. Here on Earth, higher animal forms evolved with two eyes. For example, mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and insects all have two eyes, but on another planet the number of eyes would be different. There, perhaps, the life forms would randomly have one, three, four, or even ten eyes. Is that true? Is the number of eyes a random event in the evolutionary process?

Astronomers searching for extraterrestrial intelligence are looking for planets similar to Earth regarding temperature and chemical composition because they know life evolved here, so it is logical to assume that life might also evolve on other similar planets. Likewise, with similar planetary history, we might expect the evolutionary process on those other planets to progress similarly to how it progressed here.

Question: Was the evolution of animal life with two eyes on Earth a random event, so much so that we should expect extraterrestrial life to have a different number of eyes? I think not. Why? It is called natural selection or survival of the fittest. Two eyes are the minimum required to give depth perception and concentrated focus. Perhaps early on Earth there were animals with five or ten eyes, but with a brain too small to orientate five directions, such species quickly became extinct. Only two eyes survived. Should we expect something radically different on another Earth-like planet? No. It is reasonable to expect intelligent aliens to have two eyes, just like humans.

It is also reasonable to expect alien life forms to be imaginable from the diversity of life forms we see on Earth, past and present. The Tiwanaku alien has features similar to a fish (fish mouth that seems to be breathing inside a water-filled helmet), features similar to a lobster (sea creature with two forward appendages for manipulating objects), and features similar to humans (large head and fingered upper appendages). Only four fingers are depicted in the Tiwanaku drawings, versus our five, but this easily falls within evolutionary feasibility. The alien's three-pod aquatic tail is also an imaginable evolutionary development.

I think the biologist's appreciation for the potentially enormous diversity of life forms in the universe is admirable. For those life forms that develop higher technology, however, it is likely, not unlikely, that they will have something in common with humans.

4 Reasons Your Child Should Do Science Projects All Year, Not Just For

Some people wonder how they can make science more fun for their children. Some people may want to know how they can help their children learn to understand science more. Here are some ways that you can make science more fun by doing science projects.

Doing science projects can help you and your children to learn new things about science and have fun while doing it. You can take things that your children are learning in science and make more out of it by creating a science project.

For example if your children are learning about volcanos and how they work. You can make your own volcano right in your own kitchen. Read through your childs science book and find out what exactly they are learning about volcanoes. There are usually quizzes at the end of each chapter in your childrens science book. This will give you an idea about what you child will be tested on. So if your child is going to be tested on what makes a volcano erupt or what is the lava made out of. You can call the ingredients that you are pouring into the volcano the things that make lava or make it erupt. This will help your child to have fun while doing science and want to do more science projects to help them learn about science.

Another way to make science fun is to take your children on a nature walk. This will get your children off the couch and get them more active. You can then point out specific things that you see in nature have them pick out some things that they see. Then do sciences project to teach them about the scientific part of what they saw. This will help your children to have fun while doing science projects.

A different way of getting your child to have fun doing science projects is to be interested in what they are learning about in science, and ask if you can help them do science projects. You are your childs best teacher. Your child will want to learn from you more than any one else. You can also help them to understand things in ways that other people cant because you know how they learn the best. Do a science project that they are interested in or have asked a question about. For instance if your child is interested in hot air balloons, you could spend some time together researching hot air balloons and what makes them float. Then find an event with hot air balloons in your area and take them to watch them. Then discuss the way that the hot air balloon takes off and what is fueling it to make it float. This will help to make science more fun to your child and make them want to do more science projects.

There are many different things out there that you can get your child involved in to help them have more fun with science and get the interested in doing more science projects. Encourage them to try to figure out the science behind things and how they work. This will help your child to learn more about science. Make sure to have discussions about science and about what they have learned. Your child will be excited to tell you what they discover and have learned if you act interested in what they have to say. Do science projects that can create new ways of doing things like popping popcorn. Explain why popcorn will pop one way but not another. Creating new ways to do things through science projects will help make science more fun.

Astrology has been with us since our earliest known history. The concept of astrology, which is that life is affected by the heavens, is rooted in mankinds desire to understand the universe. New life in the spring and decline in autumn are clearly related to the positioning of the sun, so it would be conceivable that other heavenly bodies had their influence on us as well.

Many of the planets are visible to the naked eye. Stars form patterns that move about the sky in a regular formation. Back in the beginning of time, early men would watch the heavenly bodies in their movements and speculate at what it might all mean, and so began the study of astrology!

There are different ways that astrology is believed to affect us. It is thought that the twelve signs of the Zodiac are tied to twelve different parts of the body, and treatment for medical problem can therefore be aided through the knowledge of astronomy. One of the most widely held beliefs in is that the position of the stars at the time of a childs birth will influence the childs life. Fortune or misfortune, wealth or poverty, are linked to the stars the person is born under.

We live in a modern age, when few people are troubled by superstitions, and while they may or may not believe in astrology, the average person knows their sign. People check their daily horoscope in the newspaper, keeping astrology a regular influence in their life.

Silver Nano Health Technology

Just like the field of medicine, it is not very easy for someone to be an expert in many things when it comes to technology. In medicine you have the dentist, chiropractor, ear-nose-throat specialist, pediatrician, nutritionist, gynecologist, oncologist, specialized surgeon and many other fields that are unique. All these fields require specialized training and experience.

Technology is as varied in specialization as medicine is. It covers so much ground from fixing a computer to managing e-commerce and beyond. It is common for service providers to cross into many technology fields without knowing what they are getting into.

Let's talk about the players.
The computer guy: This is the person who knows a little about pretty much "everything" about technology. Since he/she knows little more than you do it is easier to believe they have a solution for everything. In most cases the computer guy does not know when to seek advice from someone who is truly an expert at what they do.

The computer shop: These guys start with putting desktop computers together and selling them as white boxes or just fixing a few computers that had problems. Then they will get into networking computers. After that can come the dangerous territories of website design, branding, search engine optimization, designing web applications and programming.

Advertising company: Branding, creativity and promotion of a business is the bread and butter of an ad agency. Working with printed material, website design and multimedia productions is a natural extension. They then step into everything from search engine optimizations to customized programming.

The opportunist: For this person technology is the next business opportunity, and they have tried many other failed businesses. The opportunist has a solution for every technology you have. They only see the successes a technology has had. They believe this is the thing to do. What they don't realize is technology is like any other business because the road to riches is not an easy one.

The good technology provider never claims to have the solutions for every challenge without carefully examining the situation. The business friendly service provider specializes in one area and knows when to delegate and seek help.

Galactic Mystery - Matter - On the Dark Side

The invention of the telescope was a major advance in the science of Astronomy, but who invented it? Maybe you think you already know the answer.

Well, what would you say if I told you that you're probably wrong? After all, it was Galileo Galilei who invented it, right? You might be surprised by the answer to that question. Although Galileo Galilei was a great astronomer, he didn't invent the telescope.

If not Galileo, then who?

A man named Hans Lipperhey invented the telescope. He was born in Wesel, Germany and made his home in Middleburg, part of the Zeeland province in the Netherlands. He was married there in 1594, and became a citizen in 1602. He was a spectacle-maker by trade.

The Italians developed new glass-making techniques which were introduced to the Netherlands in the 1590's. These new techniques helped to bring about new ideas and innovations in the glass-making community and people started to experiment with different ways to combine lenses.

Where is the proof?

Many other people claim to have invented the telescope, but Hans Lipperhey is the only person documented to have applied for a patent for the device.

Child's play

Legend has it that it wasn't Hans himself, but his children who actually invented the telescope while they were playing.

So now you know the story of the telescope and how it came to be.

4 Reasons Your Child Should Do Science Projects All Year, Not Just For

There are many ways that your child can learn about science. A lot of children do not like science because they think it is boring. Science doesnt have to be boring. Here are 5 ways to make science fun.

The 1st way of making science fun is to get everyone in your family involved. One day when it is nice weather take the whole family for a hike. Along the way point out different things and ask your family questions. Then go home and research things you saw on your hike. Find out the science behind what your family saw along their hike. For instance if they saw red rocks or something like that find out what causes rocks to be red rocks. Try to incorporate things into science that you know will spark an interest in your family.

The 2nd way of making science fun is to show an interest in it. Set up a science project night to show your children you are interested in learning more about science. If your family sees that you are not interested in science they are not going to show much interest. But if you act like you want to learn more about the earth or the stars or whatever it is. Your family will have a better chance of wanting to learn more. Just make sure that you show interest. This will help your family be more excited about science and what it has to offer. The reason your family will be more excited about science is because they can relate with you about what they are doing in science and will know that you are interested and want to hear what they have to say.

The 3rd way of making science fun is to figure out different ways of doing something. For example say you want to learn more about fish. Dont just get on the internet or get a book. Take your family to the aquarium and look at all of the fish then go and do some research and figure out why certain fish are the way they are. This will help make science fun because you and your family are actually getting into it and finding out more.

The 4th way of making science fun is to do hands on experiments and science projects. For example, say your family wants to learn about the wind and how it affects things. Get a kite and get your family out and fly it. Fly the kite in different kinds of winds and then do some research. This will help you and your family relates things to science that you are learning by actually taking the time to do it. This is a way to make science fun.

The 5th way of making science fun is to discuss science while doing science projects, before an outing, after seeing science in action, etc. If you discuss with your children what they are learning they will have more fun. Discuss the outcomes of science projects that you do together. If you take the time to discuss science it will be more fun because your children will be more excited about what they are learning.

There are many ways to make science fun. You just have to get out there and find them. You know what your family is interested in and what they have fun doing. So incorporate science ideas into your family activities. Your family wont even know that you are teaching them about science because they are having fun. They will just think that you planned a family activity. Make sure to keep it light and fun and not stressful and boring. It is very important that your children learn as much as they can about science. Learning as much as they can, when it comes to science will help them in their daily lives. Science helps with problem solving and other skills that your children will need. So make science as fun as you can.

Physical Science-Harness Your Childs Energy And Get Them More Involved

Imagine you are driving along a nice smooth highway. You drive over a hill, and suddenly see a giant pothole just a few feet ahead. You brake as hard as you can, and you manage to slow down your car significantly, before its front wheels hit the pothole. BUM! BOOOM! BAH! Immediately, you feel there is something wrong with your car. Slowly you pull over to the shoulder and take a look at your front wheels. Hmm, looks like your front suspension is damaged...

While you are waiting for help, you watch another car, exactly like yours, same make and model and year, approaching this pothole. Its driver is braking, too. Surprisingly, you hear the sound of reved up engine just before his car hits the pothole. His car got shaken, but you do not hear any really bad sound. Look, this guy is not stopping to check his suspension - his suspension is just fine, and he is continuing his trip!

Was his car stronger than yours? No. Did he drive slower than you? Probably not, may be even faster. May be he just did not notice his suspension is broken? No. This driver knows physics of braking.

It is really easy concept to grasp. Your car's weight is distributed about evenly between front and rear axles. But when you slow down or accelerate, this weight distribution changes. When you are braking, the front axle is getting more weight, and when you are accelerating, the rear axle is getting more load. You probably noticed, that your car tilts forward, when you are braking, and tilts backwards, when you are accelerating. It does not seem like a big deal at the first glance, but it is a big deal for your suspension. The front axle load when braking can easily be two times more then when accelerating, or even more than that! And this directly translates to the load your suspension has to handle.

So, the correct sequence to follow in such a situation would be:
1. Brake as hard as you can up to the last moment. If you have a manual transmission, consider shifting one or even several gears down, to have the maximum possible torque on your wheels available for step 3.
2. Stop braking when you have just enough time to complete step 3, before your front wheel(s) hit the pothole.
3. Push your gas pedal all the way down to the floor, so you hit the pothole while heavily accelerating.

This method allows you to easily drive over deep and wide potholes without any damage to your suspension. On smaller obstacles you probably don't need to push the gas all the way to the floor, and the key point is to stop braking just before the obstacle to transfer the weight out of front wheels. This way you use the laws of to your advantage, and your suspension will serve you happily for a long time.

About Thinking

Telescopes are devices that are used to view the distant objects. They find its use in and physics. It enables you to view the distant objects by magnifying them. There are many types of telescopes and their prices vary according to the specifications. Many accessories are also available that can be used in conjunction with the telescopes. Small telescopes that are used as toys are also capable of viewing some objects around 50 meters away.

Principle in which the telescope works

The principle in which the telescope works is very simple. There are two lenses that make up the task of viewing the objects that are at a distance. One of the lenses picks up the light from the object viewed and makes it available at a focus point. Another lens picks up the bright light from the focus point and spreads it out to your retina so that you can view. The lens that picks up the light from the object is called the objective lens or primary mirror. The lens that picks up the light from the focal point is called the eyepiece lens.

Factors that affect the viewing of the object

The capability of the telescope to collect the light from the object that is viewed and the capability to enlarge the image are the factors that affect the efficiency of the telescope. The capability to collect light from the object depends on the diameter of the lens or mirror, which is otherwise called the aperture. The larger the aperture the more the light it can collect. Enlarging of an image depends on the combination of the lenses that are used. The eyepiece in the telescope performs the magnification.

Some of the world's largest optical telescopes in operation

We say a telescope to be larger based on the aperture size. Based on this we can say that Keck and Keck II are the largest telescopes in operation with an aperture of 10 meters diameter. The Keck telescope is composed of 36 mirror segments. This is located at Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The next largest is Hobby-Eberly located at Mt. Fowlkes, Texas which has an aperture of 9.2 meters. You can get a list of the largest optical telescopes at http://astro.nineplanets.org/bigeyes.html.

Choosing your telescope

The choice of the telescope largely depends on what you want to observe. You can choose compound telescopes and refractor type of telescope for viewing through the urban skies. For the rural skies, you can use compound telescopes and reflectors. They are better than the refractors type of telescopes. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. Hence, many people have different telescope for different purposes.

Being an effective teacher ones child begins first with knowing how you child learns. Getting a grasp on your childs learning characteristics is essential to homeschooling success. What is your childs learning ability levels? Motivation is also an important aspect. What motivates your child to learn? Knowing the pieces of your childs learning style come together to make up the learning environment. A childs learning activity is as diverse as each ones personality. As you can see, a one size fits all approach isnt going to be conducive to a dynamic learning environment.

In the beginning the best way to learn about how your child learns is to observe everything they do in their daily activities. Take notes, written or mental on how the child learns and approaches new learning situations. For instance, do they appear to learn more by touching and feeling, do they seem to learn more by drawing or expression? Do they learn by watching or doing? Today there are many child development tools, books, and software available on various types of learning styles to you to get you going in the right direction. Do some online searchesregarding child learning, learning activities, childrens learning tools, child learning websites . That type of criteria. Youll find much information on all types of learning.

An often little thought of aspect to childrens learning is what time of day does the child learn best. When is their peak learning times? This is particularly more in play with younger children.

Again all of this discussion and now research that you have done is circling back to creating an optimal learning environment for you and your child. Knowing how they learn. What motivates children to learn? When do they learn best? All of these come under the heading of learning style. Its important to know how to break the areas down into specific knowledge for yourself to insure that you create that highly effective learning so the learning experience for both you and your child is a wonderful road filled with much joy and discovery!

The Pitfalls Of Using Technology For Technologys Sake

What is it?

To explain simply, Silver Nano is a technology that some manufacturers are implemented into many of its appliances, which is meant to provide strong anti-bacterial and deodorising effects. The reason they call it the Silver Nano is because ionised silver is actually used in the technology, the silver is meant to attract and kill off bad bacteria.

How does it work?

Without trying to put you to sleep, I will attempt to explain how the technology works. When the tiny Silver Nano particles touch or come into contact with bacteria, they kill off, or suppress the life of the bacteria, which in turn inhibits cell growth. Samsung, one manufacturer using the technology claim that it removes 99.9% of all harmful bacteria within 24 hours of it being applied.

To give you an example, Samsungs new front load washing machines are just one of the appliances that are now using the Silver Nano technology. When a wash cycle is started, billions of silver ions are released and dissolve into the water, killing off bad bacteria. At the same time, your clothes are coated in the silver, which they claim will protect them for up to 30 days after the initial wash.

Because the silver kills bacteria, it is said to kill bad odours in their tracks, so Samsung has applied the Silver Nano coating to the inner walls of some of its refrigerators. This helps to keep the fridge smelling nice and clean, while preventing the spread of bacteria and fungi.

So is it worth it?

Is the Silver Nano technology something that we will see applied to all appliances in future, or will it be like a lot of other fads which we see phase out over the next few years? Well, I think the answer to this question comes down to the fact of, do we need it? Do we actually need this enhanced cleaning system in our appliances, or are the current products good enough? To be fair I dont see the harm in the , anything that has the smallest chance of keeping us healthy and hygienic has to be a good thing, but it really comes down to whether you are willing to fork out the extra from your back pocket.

Types of telescopes What are the advantages of each

Life Science, Get Your Child More Involved

DNA replication basically means creating two entire DNA strands for each daughter cell in place of the single parent cell. Prior to the cell division, its DNA within the nucleus is released by an enzyme to break the hydrogen bonds between the bases, resulting in two halves of the DNA. The uninhibited nucleotides within the nucleus bonds with the bases of both strands. Bonds with T alone while C with G, leading to exact matches for both strands.

There are four phases in cell division, or mitosis (normal cell division, meiosis forms sex cells).

Prophase: Pairing of chromosomes occurs and following replication, the parent cell has two complete sets. Two poles are formed as the nucleus disappears.

Metaphase: Alignment of the chromosomes is at the equator between the two poles.

Anaphase: The chromosomes split up towards each pole. Cell membrane division begins.

Telophase: Appearance of nuclei is at each pole and membrane divides. Two cells possess identical chromosomes.

DNA Replication

The DNA composition where two separate strands store all genetic information, replicate easily. A DNA molecule has a polymer opposite of the other, like a photonegative. One side enables the other to be recreated. This duality simplifies copying a DNA molecule remarkably.

Replication causes synthesization of DNA molecules. First a helicase enzyme unwinds the double helix, at any point on the strand, progressing to two replication forks by enzymes extending the helix release in both directions. With unwinding and straightening out of the DNA, DNA polymerase, another enzyme functions. It matches the exposed nitrogenous bases with new nucleotides from the surrounding nuclear fluid. The nucleotides and separated polymers fuse as per the regular Watson-Crick pairing rules. The completion of the separation and re-matching of the DNA molecule makes two perfect copies.

DNA replication remains partially unknown. Signals that start the process, the reason some cells dont replicate and the cause of uncontrollable replication of cancerous cells remain unexplained.

Replication in Prokaryotes

Prokaryotes or bacteria store almost the entire genetic information of an organism in a single large circular DNA ring and not in multiple chromosomes of DNA strings with unconnected ends. This replication is almost identical to eukaryotic DNA except in the use of only two replication forks. Eukaryotes and prokaryotes differ, with multiple replication sites active simultaneously in the former and the speed of the latter requiring only two, one for each direction The rate of replicating bacterial DNA is almost one million base pairs per minute whereas the average is 500 to 5000 pairs for other organisms.

DNA Replication is Semi-Conservative

On completion of the replication process, two DNA molecules result, which are identical both to each other as well as to the original. There is not the slightest alteration in each strand of the original molecule due to its role as the template for the synthesis of a complementary strand. This replication method has been termed semi-conservative; as one half of each new DNA molecule is old while the other half is new.

Finally

The need for DNA replication or cell genome duplication is created by each cell division. As with all cellular activities, specialized proteins are needed for the purpose of replication. DNA replication is surprising as a process in all organisms except in the case of humans where comprehension can prove very complex.

Telescopes a Principle of operation and factors that affect its properties

How To Make Science More Fun-Do Science Projects

Life Science, Get Your Child More Involved

Through the wonders of science, infertile couples who were previously unable to bear children, due to reasons such as blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm count, low egg quantities or advanced age of the mother, are now able to conceive through in-vitro fertilization. The results are babies known as test-tube babies which are technically conceived outside the womb.

In a natural scenario, the conception of a baby occurs when the ovum, travels from the ovaries, through the fallopian tube to be fertilized by the sperm of the father during sexual intercourse. From this point on, the fertilized egg will travel down towards the uterus and during the process division of cells will occur until it reaches its final destination at the wall of the uterus. However, in the cases of block fallopian tubes, the eggs are unable to travel from the ovaries to the uterus and conception cannot happen.

Developed in the United Kingdom by Dr. Patrick Steptoe and Dr. Robert Edwards, the process of in-vitro fertilization involves removing eggs from the ovaries of the mother and combining them with the sperm of the father in a lab environment. The fertilized egg is then placed back into the uterus of the mother after 3 to 5 days and will remain there to grow till birth. Because of the low success pregnancy rate of this procedure, a few eggs are placed in the uterus to increase the odds of success. With this process, statistics have shown that the rates of multiple births have increased where 24 percent of the in-vitro fertilization births have produced twins.

The first test-tube baby, Louise Brown, who was born on the 25th July 1978, marked hope for other infertile couples to have a baby through this procedure. However, many others were concerned about the ethical issues surround this. One major area of concern was the fact that as the egg is located outside the womb for a few days while the cells multiplied before being put back inside the uterus, the health issues affecting this baby is unknown. Indeed, research has been shown that test-tube babies have a higher chance of birth defects and low birth weight, and researchers still have not been able to determine the reason for this.

Other issue of concern is that through this procedure, some of the eggs fertilized in the lab are later discarded. Does this procedure mean that the researchers are actually killing potential people? How is the line drawn in this case?

Then there is also the issue of commercial opportunities for eggs and sperms to be bought and surrogate wombs to be rented with the purpose of creating babies. This process of embryo transfer to another mother, not necessarily the same woman who had provided the eggs, is known as placing the embryo in a gestational carrier. This procedure has been becoming increasingly common through technological advancement, which has made couples including women with uterus problems, have a chance in having their baby.

Test-tube babies have really brought changes to the way in which babies are conceived and have given much hope to many who have had problems having babies through the process of . However, the downside of this are the ethical issues behind the procedure, with which still poses a big question mark and with which is still opposed by many factions. For more details on cell,
